I wanted to create a controller for my lego RC car which was easier to use than the standard remote. The problem with the standard remote is that both levers move in the same direction which is great for "tank steering" but I wanted a remote which has a forward-backwards lever and a left-right lever for steering.
The first challenge was to come up with a design to convert one of the levers from forwards-backwards to left-right which proved to be more difficult as I first thought. For inspiration I searched the Internet and I found several different designs. The first design I built used a wheel on the side of the remote which acted like a steering wheel similar to a remote control of a standard rc car (see image 1). The next design I built was a bit different as it used a pivot to convert the forwards-backwards lever to a left-right motion (see image 2)
I am pleased with my final design of my controller as the pivot works well to convert the forwards-backwards lever into a left-right lever. If I had to rebuild it the only thing I would change would be to make it more solid .
